Skipping and Running

Eating my lunch
I watched kid after kid
exit a classroom door and
break into a spontaneous run
down the hallway (while nobody
was looking) into another classroom.
Little kids don't go anywhere without
running like their life depended on it which
it may when they get older and suddenly stop
running, stop skipping, stop expressing the joy
and energy they so abundantly had just a few short
years earlier and gain an attitude and a sense of something
to protect, something to defend--like they now had something
to lose, whereas before they had nothing to lose.  Whatever sense
of loss, or misplacement can be instantly replaced with an infinite
number of objects of attention that can equally draw the joy from their being.

Skipping and running.  Let's get it back--do a system restore--
into the factory ready condition we once so naturally had.
